What are apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are made of knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs), that combine academic qualifications with real life work experience leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged over 16 who is not in full time education, and are available to new staff or existing employees.

Apprentices are paid a salary and have vocational responsibilities as part of their role. This gives them the opportunity to earn money whilst gaining the qualifications, knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for their chosen career.

How do apprenticeships work?

There are several stakeholders who play a significant part in the apprenticeship journey.

Apprentice

Apprentice

Participate in development opportunities to gain the KSBs as outlined in the standard.

Employer

Employer

Employ and support the apprentice to achieve the KSBs outlined in the standard. Employers determine when the apprentice has met the KSBs and are ready for End Point Assessment (EPA). The employer will also select the EPAO.

Training Provider

Training Provider

Work with the employer and apprentice, to ensure the apprentice is given opportunities to develop the KSBs and continually monitor their progress.

End-Point Assessment Organisation

End-Point Assessment Organisation

Provide information and guidance to enable apprentices, employers and training providers to prepare for the EPA. Deliver the end-point assessment outlined in the Assessment plan in a timely manner and arrange certification.

identify

Employers identify an apprentice and an apprenticeship standard suitable for that role.

Employer

Employers engage with a training provider to conduct an initial assessment and start the apprenticeship.

Employer

Over the course of the apprenticeship, apprentices will gain skills on and off the job through on-going training by the employer and training provider.

Employer

The employer and training provider will determine when the apprentice has achieved all the KSBs.

The apprentice then progresses to the End Point Assessment (EPA) to gain apprenticeship qualification.
